Amir Alavi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Department

Dr. Amir H. Alavi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and holds courtesy appointments in the Department of Bioengineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Alavi's research at the forefront of multifunctional metamaterials enables the development of robust and resilient materials for spacecraft and habitats. These advanced material systems can be engineered to withstand extreme conditions such as high pressure, temperature extremes, and radiation exposure, making them highly suitable for space applications. Additionally, Dr. Alavi’s pioneering research in the field of self-powered sensors facilitates the creation of autonomous structural health monitoring systems for early damage detection and prevention of catastrophic failures in spacecraft and other space infrastructure.
