Dr. Ronald Poropatich, MD, MS—a retired US Army Colonel with 30 years of active service—serves as the Senior Advisor for VA and Military Medicine at the Center for Military Medicine Research (CMMR) and Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. Under his guidance, Pitt CMMR builds multidisciplinary teams that secure significant Department of Defense research funding to advance military and veteran health. A key focus of this DoD-funded work includes AI-driven autonomous care systems, such as TRACIR and CRUISE, which provide closed-loop physiological stabilization and real-time clinical decision support. Designed to operate under extreme mass, volume, power, and communication constraints, these dual-use technologies are being translated into the Pitt Space Initiative to deliver critical, autonomous life support and prolonged casualty care in isolated, high-risk operational environments where immediate evacuation is impossible.
