Health Information Management Department

Leming Zhou is an Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. He graduated with a PhD degree in Physics and DSc degree in Computer Science from the George Washington University. He then started to work as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Information Management at the University of Pittsburgh. He was promoted to an Associate Professor and Program Director in 2018. In addition to his primary appointment at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Dr Zhou has secondary appointment in the Department of Bioengineering in the Swanson School of Engineering and in the Intelligent System Program in the School of Computing and Information. He is also an affiliated member of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Zhou is both an educator and researcher. He has taught graduate courses such as Genomics and Its Applications in Health Science, Java Programming, Python Programming, Security, Privacy, and Legal Issues in Healthcare, Data Science in Health Informatics, Machine Learning in Health Science, and Healthcare Analytics and Data Visualization. In his research, he analyzed large scale data sets such as genomic data, wearable sensor data, and videos. He created computer models to simulate the development of cardiovascular restenosis, pressure ulcer, and osteoporosis. His research is funded by the NIH, NSF, VA, and NIDILRR. Dr. Zhou is interested in Space Medicine. He is particularly interested in two topics. One is the change of genome after plants, animals or human beings have been in the microgravity and strong radiation environment. The other is to simulate the progress of diseases such as heart disease and osteoporosis in the microgravity environment. The final goal of the research is to provide suggestions for adjusted care plan for people and animals during spaceflight, and on Earth for patients in need.
