Murat Akcakaya is an Associate Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt), Senior Member of IEEE, and the director of the Signal Processing and Statistical Learning (SPSL) Laboratory. The research interests of his group are in the fields of machine learning, statistical signal processing and optimization. Under his mentorship and oversight, his students develop machine learning methods (i) for optimization, adaptation and personalization of human computer interaction, human-in-the-loop systems and assistive technologies, (ii) to analyze ambulatory and/or multimodal physiological data, (iii) to provide cognition to systems operating in nonstationary environments or demonstrating nonstationary behavior, and (iv) for probabilistic modeling and simulations of large and complex physical systems. His space research interests also align with the above listed items especially in the fields of developing machine learning models for multimodal and ambulatory physiological data analysis and developing cognitive systems operating in nonstationary environments. His research has been supported through NSF, NIH, AFOSR and DOE.
